How Seva Became a Way of Life
It is often said in testing times: “Karmaṇo gahano gatee”(कर्मणो गहनो गती)
The ways of karma are profound and inscrutable.
This Vedic truth has shaped many lives, and it holds especially true for Abhay Kher. The Kher family’s ancestral home was in Baroda, where Abhay also began his career in a Bank after completing his studies. While his brothers moved to other cities for work and his sister to her marital home, the responsibility of the Baroda residence rested with Abhay and his wife, Varsha. Their home remained open to a steady stream of visitors and devotees.
Abhay’s father, P.P. Janardan Swami Kher, followed the command of Shri Swami Samarth and traveled extensively for the welfare of people, returning home for only a few days each month. When the bank where Abhay worked showed signs of closure, with Swamiji’s permission, he left his job to secure his rightful benefits.In those early years, three major festivals Shri Guru Purnima, Shri Datta Jayanti, and Shri Akkalkot Swami’s Punyatithi were celebrated in Baroda for decades. Organizing them gave Abhay invaluable experience. Under Swamiji’s guidance, the family learned to manage public contributions with discipline and transparency: “Donations are a social fund. They must be used selflessly for society’s upliftment and for the festival alone.”
Swamiji often told his children, “After I depart, someone will have to carry forward the Ashram’s work.” By circumstance, that responsibility often fell on Abhay. What began as occasional service gradually became his life’s path. Through Swamiji’s letters, newspaper clippings, and practical training in trust law, income tax, and Ashram administration, Abhay gained deep insight into its operations.
Recognizing their dedication, Swamiji appointed Abhay and Varsha as his spiritual successors " उत्तराधिकारी" in his will, entrusting them with building a cultured society and serving the poor and needy. Accepting the Guru’s command as supreme, as per Swamiji’s wish & will the couple continues to offer Diksha to seekers.
Today, Abhay Dada & Varsha, with the support of brothers, sister, sisters-in-law, children, and daughters-in-law, carry forward Swamiji’s spiritual mission.
The family prays at the feet of Sadguru Shri Janardan Swami Kher that all disciples and devotees continue to support them in this sacred work.
Guru -Diksha : Transforms one’s life
There are many incidents narrated by people who received Guru-Diksha from Abhay Dada, describing the positive transformations they experienced thereafter.
Abhay Dada’s introduction would be incomplete without sharing few such incidents.
A Glimpse of the Future Guru
Senior disciple of Swamiji ,Sharad Joshi Kaka from Dombivli narrated this incident:
When the Ashram was newly established, he once visited. Early one morning, he began cleaning the premises by sweeping. Swamiji was standing nearby, watching him.
At that moment, young Abhay arrived, took the broom from Kaka’s hands, and began sweeping himself.
Swamiji then called Sharad Kaka to his side and asked, “How do you find your Guru?”
Sharad Kaka replied, “You are my Guru, and I find you to be perfect.”
Swamiji smiled and said, “I am asking you about your future Guru, not about me,” pointing towards young Abhay.
Sharad Kaka understood the indication and offered Namaskar to Swamiji and to his future Guru .
Receiving Mantra Deeksha from Swamiji
Around the same time-period Abhay dada expressed his desire to receive initiation, P.P. Janardan Swami agreed to give Mantra Deeksha to Abhay dada ,Uday and Sugandha Swamiji applied Vibhuti to the Adnya Chakra, placed his hand on their heads, and gave them the _ Mantra Deeksha_ in the meditation temple which is the Dhyan mandir at Swamiji’s Sursagar residence in Vadodara.
Abhay Dada was additionally blessed with Shaktipat Deeksha. During meditation he experienced energy rising through the spine to the Adnya Chakra, and had a divine vision of Goddess Lakshmi on a pink lotus showering blessings and gold coins.
Afterwards, when Swamiji heard his experience, he simply smiled.
The Grace of the Neelpurush on Shri Abhay dada
After receiving Shaktipat Deeksha from P.P. Janardan Swami, once Abhay Dada developed a high fever.
It so happened one day ,when Swamiji was away from Baroda, Abhay Dada went to the railway station to see off his disciple. There he suddenly fell ill with fever and returned home. Half an hour later, with eyes open, he saw a vast blue ocean. From it emerged a blue, human-like being with a tail instead of legs. It circled him three times, touched his right ear, and vanished. Soon after, his fever and illness intensified.When Swamiji returned two days later, mother told him about Abhay Dada’s condition and that medicines were not helping.
Swamiji came, looked at Abhay Dada’s feet, and said: “See how pink his feet have become. Abhay has been blessed with the Darshan of Neelpurush. That is why he has this fever. Do not worry. He will be fine in two days.”
After recovery, Swamiji gave him ‘Chit Shakti Vilas’ by Shri Muktanand Swamiji to read, pointing to the chapter on Neelpurush Darshan and said: “You too have had a similar experience. Such things happen after receiving Deeksha”
Guru Krupa is eternal
These incidents have occurred recently
Two of Swamiji’s disciples — one who had fractured her back and another who was seriously ill — were suffering greatly.
Swamiji appeared in Abhay Dada’s dream and instructed him to tell both disciples to read his biography. He said that by doing so, they would feel better.
Abhay Dada conveyed this message to them. Later, both of them shared that after reading the biography, they began recovering and felt much better.
